    ACE-Lab Rig App

From rig data to a tested controller in three steps: Identify the motor from measured data, Tune a PI controller on the model, then Test it on the ACE-Box, with the theory beside every result.

Open in MATLAB Online View on GitHub Download (ZIP)

Opens in your browser with a free MathWorks account; Test mode simulates the motor, so no hardware is needed to try it. The ZIP is the full ACE-Lab repository: the app is in 06_Apps/ACE-Lab-Rig-App.

ACE-Lab Rig App, step 3 Testing: speed and drive, requirements table, s-plane and z-plane

    Three steps

The same workflow students follow in the C1.3 and C1.4 practical exercises, in one app.

    1

    System identification

Excite the motor with a PRBS around an operating point, log speed and drive, and fit an ARX model by linear least squares.

    • Optional low-pass filter H(s), with its effect on the noise
    • Identified G(z) and G(s) = K/(τs + 1), fit and ±1σ
    2

    Tuning via model

Design the PI on the identified model, simulated in Simulink, by either method.

    • Pole placement: overshoot → ζ, rise time → ωₙ, target poles → Kp, Ki
    • Optimisation: requirements + priority, cost map and search
    3

    Testing

Adjust Kp and Ki, watch the closed-loop poles move on the s- and z-planes, and run a step test on the rig.

    • Model and rig speed and drive on one plot
    • Each requirement checked: limit, model, rig, met?

    Inside the app

    Step 1 System identification

Step 1: the measured speed against the identified model, the filter's effect on the noise, and the identified G(z) and G(s).

    Run it

    MATLAB Online NO INSTALL

    1. Click Open in MATLAB Online and sign in.
    2. With ACELabRigApp.m open, press Run (choose Change Folder if asked).
    3. Start in Test mode.

    Desktop MATLAB

    1. Download the ZIP and unzip it.
    2. Open 06_Apps/ACE-Lab-Rig-App in MATLAB.
    3. Type ACELabRigApp.

Needs MATLAB and Simulink (R2021a or later).

    With the ACE-Box

Set Mode → Hardware. The app builds the model for the Arduino Uno and runs it in External mode (Monitor & Tune).

    • Desktop: Simulink Support Package for Arduino Hardware (see G1)
    • Online: MATLAB Connector on the PC the box is plugged into
